When I was younger I worked in a nursing home on the weekends. Needless to say there were many wonderful subjects to inspire me. The stories of the residents were told on their faces. Lillian, the subject in this painting, was an especially bright and cheery woman. One day I met her in the library and the light through the window was dancing across her face. I asked if I could take her picture and she graciously agreed and I captured this moment. Since then I’ve painted her several times. One version is owned by the Huntsville Museum of Art in Alabama. As I painted this one I was uniquely bold with my colors which I think captured her sweet and vibrant personality.
