RICHARD – Sometimes a painting is more powerful left partly undone. Two reasons stand out to me and both engage the viewer’s participation. One, the viewer is engaged by the opportunity to see the process and the thinking of the artist. Two, the viewer is compelled to finish the painting or at least wonder how it might have been “completed.” I don’t think adding anything to this particular portrait would have necessarily made it stronger. What I was after was captured at this stage so it wasn’t neccesary to continue. The painting was complete.
