The Quarrel

This painting was originally titled “Lovers” simply because I saw the two main characters — the red and coral roses — interacting intimately. The coral rose, bashful and coy and the red rose somewhat full of itself displayed as the center of interest in the composition. Then, as I considered another angle, I saw the coral rose turning away from a display of immutable, stubborn pride. Hurtful words have just been spoken and the coral rose feels defeated — even rejected. Not that reconciliation is unachievable but for the moment separation is inevitable. NOTE: If you read my previous post “Read the Instructions — First!” this is the painting submitted — the large one — to the 2015 NWS Members Exhibition.
